According to police and a government official, a bus collision and subsequent fire in Oyo state resulted in at least 20 passengers dying from burn injuries.

The incident happened on Friday night at Lanlate in the state’s Ibarapa region.

Yesterday’s accident was confirmed by Hon. Gbenga Obalowo, Chairman of the Ibarapa Local Government Area.

According to Obalowo, “it was a fatal accident. We counted over 20 completely burned human bodies.

He claimed that after colliding head-on, both of the vehicles, which were transporting passengers, caught fire and were irreparably damaged.

He claimed that two survivors of the crash who had “severe burns” had been taken to the hospital.

A senior police officer in the state confirmed the collision, stating without further explanation that “20 people lost their lives in the accident.”

Obalowo cited speeding and careless driving as the causes of the collision.

In Kaduna state, three vehicles collided on a highway in July, causing 30 people to be burned to death.

According to data from the road safety commission, 10,637 traffic accidents occurred in Nigeria in 2021, resulting in 5,101 fatalities and more than 30,000 injuries.
