The inability to operate flights from the Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal (MMA2) Ikeja in Lagos is costing domestic airlines money.

Only three airlines—Ibom Airlines, United Airlines, and Valujet Airlines—have been able to run single flights out of the terminal since early Tuesday morning.

Passengers who were stuck and unable to enter the MMA2 are rushing to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN)-operated General Aviation Terminal (GAT) to buy tickets and process their flights.

Concerned about the development, Ibom Air, one of the affected carriers, urged the feuding parties to try to resolve the crisis amicably.

The management of Ibom Air issued the following statement: “This is to bring to the attention of our esteemed passengers and the public that the Labour Union completely closed off workers’ and passengers’ access to our operating terminal out of Lagos, the Murtala Mohamed Airport 2, operated by Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited, very early this morning.

“While we are working to find a solution, please be aware that this action will significantly affect our flights in and out of Lagos today.

We deeply regret how this unexpected action has affected your plans for the day and ask that you kindly keep an eye on all of our communication channels for further information.

A passenger lamented the situation, saying “As of right now, no other flight has been able to operate from the terminal because the protesters are preventing intended passengers from entering the terminal.”

Aviation unions claim that management at terminal operator Bi- Courteney Aviation Services Limited (BASL) fired 37 employees without following the proper procedures.
