The Academic Staff Union of Universities, or ASUU, has promised to end its nationwide strike if the Federal Government meets its demands during today’s (Tuesday’s) meeting.

Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, National President of ASUU, stated this on Channels Television’s Politics Today program on Monday.

“If we go into that meeting tomorrow and the government says, what you’ve bargained for, we’re willing to sign,” he said, “the strike will be called off.”

Since February 14, 2022, the lecturers’ union has been on strike after the Federal Government refused to meet some of its demands.

Some of their demands include the release of university revitalization funds, the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement, the release of earned allowances for university lecturers, and the deployment of the UTAS payment platform for the payment of university lecturers’ salaries and allowances.

On July 19, President Muhammadu Buhari gave the Minister of Education a two-week deadline to resolve the dispute between the Federal Government and the union.

Although the Presidency denied any ultimatum, the President’s media aide, Garba Shehu, stated on July 20 that agreements could be reached in even less time if all parties/stakeholders are not unrealistically obstinate.
