THE INEC, Lagos, has stated that over one million Permanent Voters Cards, PVCs, have not been collected by registrants. In addition, INEC has scheduled July 25 and 26 for Persons Living with Disabilities (PLWDs) to register, in collaboration with the Lagos State Office of Disability Affairs, LASODA.

Ikorodu Central Local Government Area (Ikorodu); Ability and Disability Centre, Ajara (Badagry); Old Secretariat (Ikeja); Onikan Youth Centre (Lagos Island); Sports Recreation Centre (Epe); Idi-Araba Correctional Centre; Teslim Balogun Stadium and Correctional Centre, Oko-Baba, Ebute-Metta are the eight special centres designated for this purpose across the state’s five Ibile divisions.

The exercise will be carried out in collaboration with the Lagos State Office of Disability Affairs, or LASODA.

Muyiwa Yusuf, the head of INEC Voter Registry, stated at a media briefing on Friday in Ikeja that the commission has made special consideration for the registration of PLWDs. While lamenting that over one million PVCs had yet to be collected from the six million people registered in Lagos for the 2023 elections, Yusuf urged concerned citizens to go to their local government areas for collection.

He stated that since the electoral body began the CVR exercise for the 2023 elections, over 75,000 PLWDs have been captured across the country.

Yusuf stated about the special registration centers and days that “the two days will be well taken care of so that they are well captured.”

“The two days are for people with disabilities to register so that we can have them in our database and ensure they are not disenfranchised,” he says.

“There is a biometric machine to capture those who cannot thumb print, while braille and magnifying glasses will be provided for those with albinism.” The polling places will be wheelchair accessible as well.”

Dare Dairo, the General Manager of LASODA, also lamented that PLWDs were affected by social poverty due to exclusion, but explained that this was why the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration set aside two days to allow them to register.

“We have created special centres across Lagos in collaboration with INEC so that PLWDs can register and revalidate their PVCs,” he said.

“We assigned INEC officials to these centers and conducted a feasibility study.” It is up to the PLWDs to use this window to obtain their PVCs for the 2023 elections.”
