On Sunday, Ogun State Police Command arrested six suspected Eiye cult members while attempting to assassinate a traditional ruler in his palace.

According to the command’s Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, the suspects are Michael Ayodele, Monday Samuel, Ademola Matthew, Hammed Jelili, Ogundele Ojeh, and Sunkanmi Fadina.

Oyeyemi stated that the suspects were apprehended after a distress call was received at Oja Odan divisional headquarters at 4:25 p.m. from Oba of Gbokoto land, Oba G. O. Olukunle, that some cultists were about to kill him in his home.

“Upon receiving the distress call, the DPO Oja-Odan division mobilised his men and moved to the palace, where they met the hoodlums shooting sporadically within the palace,” Oyeyemi explained.

“The cops engaged them in a shoot-out, eventually subduing the cultists and arresting six of them.”

“During questioning, the suspects admitted to being members of the dreaded Eiye confraternity.” They also informed the police that it was the Oba’s son, who is now at large, who invited them to come and eliminate his father due to an unresolved issue the Oba had with his mother.”

One locally made double barrel pistol, two live cartridges, and one expended cartridge were recovered from them.

Oyeyemi went on to say that the Oba’s son, who had fled, was said to have escaped with another gun belonging to the group.

Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole, has ordered that the suspects be immediately transferred to the state Criminal Investigation Department for discreet investigation, with the intention of charging them in court once the investigation is completed.

The CP also ordered a manhunt for the Oba’s evading son in order to bring him to justice.
