Usman Bajama, a 75-year-old grandfather, was one of 22 suspects detained by National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) agents during operations in seven states over the course of the previous week. During that time, over a million bottles/capsules of the illegal new psychoactive substance Akuskura, tramadol, and 2,536 kilograms of cannabis were also seized.

In Edo and Adamawa states, farms totaling more than 10 hectares were destroyed during the operations. The elderly man, whose alias is Clement, was detained early on last Tuesday at Anguwan State, Mararraban Tola, Mayo Belwa Council Area of Adamawa State where he had a cannabis plantation from which 49 kilograms of the illegal substance were recovered, according to a statement made yesterday by Femi Babafemi, the spokesman for the anti-narcotics agency.

According to Babafemi, NDLEA agents in Kwara state confiscated at least 19,878 bottles of the illegal new psychoactive substance Akuskura last Wednesday along the Ilorin-Jebba highway and detained two suspects, Oladokun Oluwaseun, 49, and Ibrahim Jimoh, 27.

They both, according to him, stated that the consignment, which was packed in 35 jumbo sacks, was intended for distribution in Jos, Plateau state, but was loaded in Ibadan, Oyo state.

Two suspects, Ukoro Ifeanyi, 46, and Idowu Toyosi, 20, had previously been detained in Ilorin’s Mararaba Park with 2,290 tramadol capsules and 100 bottles of syrup with a codeine base. From Onitsha, Anambra State, the drugs were brought in.

He claimed that on the basis of reliable information, NDLEA agents in Lagos State stopped a Volvo truck carrying 2,146 kilograms of cannabis in the Sangotedo area of Ajah, and three suspects, Abdulazeez Rasheed, Afeez Raheem, and Moshood Suleiman, were detained. He also claimed that Musbahu Ya’u, 28, and five others were found in possession of at least 979,119 expired pregabalin capsules, totaling 733 kilogram

In a similar vein, a truck traveling from Lagos to Abuja had 117.7 kilograms of the psychoactive substance when it was stopped along the Okene-Abuja expressway.

At Chigbite, Utese forest in Ovia North East local government area and Ekudo forest, Uhunmonde local government area, where more than 10 hectares of cannabis plantation were destroyed and more than 193 kilogrammes of the processed illicit substance were seized, NDLEA agents stormed the farms and arrested six cannabis farmers. David Hanson, Ufuoma Progress, Marvelous Armstrong, Marvelous Efe, Joshua Abubakar, and Elijah Abubakar are among those detained.

Meanwhile, two freight agents were detained by anti-drug officers at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos for attempting to smuggle 26.20 kilograms of cannabis hidden in cereal packs through the SAHCO shed for export to Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Before being transferred to NDLEA by airport security, the consignment, according to him, was abandoned at the shed.
