Yakubu Maikyau, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), has been elected as the 31st President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

His election comes after a legal body election that lasted from 12:01 a.m. on Saturday to 11:59 p.m. on the same day.

What the NBA Electoral Committee Chairman has to say

While announcing the results of the election on Sunday in Abuja, the Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Professor Ayodele Akintunde, said Maikyau polled a total of 22, 342 votes to win the election, followed closely by his fellow SAN, Joe-Kyari Gadzama, Chairman of the NBA Securities Agencies Relations Committee, who polled 10, 842 votes.

Mr Taidi Jonathan, a former NBA General Secretary, came in third place with 1,373 votes.

“A total of 59,392 records were received as final voter register people, and we were able to upload 59,388 records, with four records having invalid contact information,” he said.

“A total of 34, 809 votes were cast, representing 58.61 percent of all eligible voters, while 1,314 ballots were opened but not cast.”

According to Akintunde, some of the most common complaints received by the Electoral Committee Secretariat included some lawyers’ inability to correctly input their Supreme Court Number (SCN) as instructed, incorrect/invalid contact information, no voting links, and multiple email reminders.

With the announcement, Maikyau is expected to take over the NBA’s leadership from outgoing President Olumide Akpata.

Mrs Linda Bala was elected as 1st Vice President, Mr Clement Ugo as 2nd Vice President, and Mrs Amanda Demechi-Asagba as 3rd Vice President.

Twenty lawyers were elected to the NBA General Council on an equal basis to represent the western, eastern, and northern zones.

What the NBA’s new President has to say

In his acceptance speech, Maikyau urged all those who ran but lost to join his team in making the association better.
He also advised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to come to understudy the NBA’s technology-driven electoral system in order to conduct free and fair elections in 2023, adding that his administration would be transparent, promote the rule of law, and protect human rights in the country.
Akpata, whose term expires on August 26, is the only NBA President in the last decade who is not a senior advocate of Nigeria.
