In Nigeria, where there is a large population of young people, the content creation industry is growing and becoming a popular career choice. This development is being fueled by viral media. The #Viralityincontentcreation panel at the 2022 New Media Conference (NMC) noted that the development of viral media technology has transformed the content creation sector and created new business opportunities.

The British Council Nigeria office in Lagos hosted the 2022 NMC conference on Saturday, October 29, 2022, which drew participants from all over the continent. The conference, which was put on by Oluwatosin Ajibade, the founder of OloriSuperGal (OSG) Media, focused on how viral media is changing how people interact in a variety of contexts, including politics, technology, business, fashion, and the arts.

According to Taiwo Adeyemi, a talent agent, creative executive, and storyteller, “the most interesting aspect of content creation over the years is that you can proudly own it as a career now and you will be accepted.” It used to be that your parents wanted you to become a doctor or a lawyer, but times have changed now. The panel emphasized how the availability of smartphones, increasing internet penetration, and inexpensive or free social media platforms have democratized access to the industry.

Young Nigerians are drawn to the flexible and lucrative nature of the content creation sector, claims Pamilerin Adegoke, a content creator, media entrepreneur, and philanthropist. He declared, “I can create content anywhere in the world and get paid.

The Nigerian market for content creation was also emphasized as a vital resource for companies and brands to use in crafting and controlling their narratives. Broad-reaching content can assist brands in entering new markets and reaching a wider audience, according to Street Church’s Tunde Morolari, Creative Director. According to him, viral content is crucial to the globalization of brands.

Media Strategist and Talent Manager Olufemi Oguntamu urged creators to focus on the process and the outcome rather than the number of likes and views. Olufemi also counseled content producers to concentrate on monetizing their work rather than trying to go viral for the sake of it. “Consistency comes after Virality to maintain the audience you already gained,” he said.

The panelists discussed the need for content producers to be deliberate with the messages they spread, take the law into account, and steer clear of misinformation. Additionally, they exhorted industry participants to be receptive to changes brought on by technology as new platforms appear. The panel also stressed the importance of increasing funding for the development of a pipeline for aspiring and new content creators to learn skills as well as the business and ethics of content creation.

Let’s be willing to establish universities in Africa where students can obtain B.A. degrees in photography, as well as other types of content creation, etc., suggested Tunde.

A lively discussion with the conference attendees marked the successful conclusion of the panel discussion, which was moderated by media entrepreneur Moji Delano. Isabella Adediji, the owner of the Lagos-based media and public relations firm Yellow Tamarind Productions, served as the event’s host.

The British Council Nigeria and OSG Media are both sponsoring the event. News Central TV, Goldmyne TV, and Media Room Hub are the event’s media partners. Visit www.newmediaconference.ng for more details.
