A police officer from the Nekede Police Division allegedly shot an ND2 student from the Federal Polytechnic Nekede, PolyNek.

The incident occurred at the entrance gate of Ben Jen Lodge in Umuokomoche, Imo State’s Owerri West Local Government Area.

Emeka Uwalaka, a civil engineering student, was said to be returning from church on Sunday when the unidentified cop allegedly shot at him, with the bullet hitting the student’s hostel gate.

When the students heard the gunshots, they reportedly ran for cover, fearful of stray bullets.

Uwalaka told DAILY POST on Monday that on his way back from church on Sunday, he noticed people running and asked the caretaker why everyone at Ben jen lodge was running.

“I only asked Mr Prince, the hostel caretaker who happens to be my brother, what happened,” he says. I didn’t even speak to the cops, and that was my only transgression before the trigger-happy officer opened fire on me. I’m glad I wasn’t hit by the bullet.

He requested that the Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, apprehend him and sanction the said police officer as a deterrent to other officers who are so quick to take the law into their own hands.

Also speaking, Okeke Prince, the lodge’s caretaker, expressed shock because he was no longer confident in their safety in the hands of the cops.

“These officers assaulted Mr. Okpara Emmanuel of the Department Electrical Engineering, who is waiting for NYSC call-up, and I queried why they took away his wristwatch, phone, and insisted on searching his room,” the caretaker said. I’m the caretaker, so I have to intervene, but it only took the intervention of the community vigilantes to calm the situation.”

He stated that the officer would face the full force of the law.
