The Argentine defender is set to leave the Eredivisie champions for the English Premier League giants.

Calvin Bassey, a Nigerian defender, has been named as Ajax Amsterdam’s replacement for Argentine international Lisandro Martinez.

Lisandro Martinez is on the verge of a £46 million move to Manchester United, according to a TalkSport report via the Daily Record. And Ajax are confident that versatile Glasgow Rangers star Calvin Bassey will fill the void left by the Copa America winner in 2021.

Bassey, who moved from Leicester City to Rangers in 2020, has unsurprisingly become one of the most sought-after defenders on the European circuit.

Bassey made a huge step up this season, becoming a vital part of Rangers’ set-up at Ibrox after being a peripheral member of the club’s title-winning squad last year.

Bassey was instrumental in Rangers reaching the Europa League final. In the penalty shootout loss to Eintracht Frankfurt, the 23-year-old was named man of the match. He was also named to the competition’s season team.

Bassey put in another strong performance in the Scottish Cup final, which Rangers won over Hearts.

With this string of impressive performances, Europe as a whole was alerted to his talent.

Several Premier League clubs, including Wolves, Brentford, and Chelsea, have been linked to the Super Eagles’ star.

However, Ajax may have jumped ahead of the pack after a £20 million deal fell through.

Bassey, a versatile defensive kingpin for Glasgow Rangers, has excelled at centre-back, left full-back, and left wing-back.
