A boat accident in the Guma Local Government Area of Benue state has resulted in SIX deaths.

There were forty passengers on board the boat at the time of the incident; 26 have been rescued, while eight others are still missing.

This was revealed in a statement released on Thursday by Catherine Anene, the public relations officer (PRO) of the Benue State Police Command.

“A boat carrying forty people from Guma LGA to Buruku LGA for business capsized in the river near Fada village, Guma LGA, on September 20, 2022, at 1300 hours.

According to her, “combined efforts of the police and fishermen in the area led to the rescue of twenty-six (26) persons who were taken to a hospital for treatment, six (6) corpses have been recovered, and a search for the remaining eight (8) persons is ongoing.”

Benue State Commissioner of Police Wale Abass sympathized with the families of the deceased while advising residents to take every precaution possible when traveling by boat given the recent rise in water level.

This incident occurred less than a week after the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency issued warnings regarding the rise in major rivers and water sources throughout different parts of Nigeria (NIHSA).

The Agency had urged officials and citizens in several states, including Benue, to be aware of floods and other disasters that might be brought on by the country’s rising water levels.
