Mrs. Obiageri Mazi, a teacher who was greeted at her duty post as early as 6 a.m. nearly two years ago when Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, paid an unplanned visit to her school, is one of the 24 primary school teachers assigned houses in the state’s newly built teacher quarters.

Mrs. Mazi, who is from Abia State and has been a teacher at the Shehu Sanda Kyarimi 2 Primary School under the Jere Local Government Education Authorities for 31 years, was promoted from class teacher to Assistant Headmistress following the governor’s visit as an executive reward for her punctuality.

Zulum, a professor, had been at the school about 6 a.m. as part of his unplanned supervision, and he was surprised to see Mazi already there waiting for her students.

On the scene, the governor offered her N100,000 in cash and granted her rapid promotion.

Obiageli was rewarded once more when her name was drawn from among the 24 school teachers who were assigned flats in a newly disclosed quarters developed by Zulum’s administration in Maiduguri.

President Muhammadu Buhari inaugurated the sector a few weeks ago during his visit to Maiduguri for the 2022 World Humanitarian Day.

Zulum has completed approximately 600 capital projects, including the teachers’ quarters in Bulumkutu on the airport road.

During a brief ceremony last Wednesday at the quarters, the state government distributed fully furnished 24 units of the houses to primary school teachers from the Maiduguri and Jere Local Education Authorities (LEA).

While handing over the houses to the beneficiaries, the state Commissioner for Education, Lawan Abba Wakilbe, revealed that the state government has constructed similar houses in Banki Town of Bama Local Government Area and Mafa, and that Zulum’s administration will expand such projects to other LGAs in order to provide accommodation for hardworking teachers in the LGAs.

The commissioner went on to say that beneficiaries were chosen on merit from several schools in the area surrounding the quarters. He instructed teachers to take good care of the facility because it is institutional property.

Meanwhile, the state Commissioner for Housing and Energy, Yuguda Vungas, whose ministry built the quarters, revealed that the houses consisted of 12 units each of fully furnished two bedrooms, a sitting room, a kitchen, and two self-contained toilets, while 12 other houses are fully furnished one bedroom, a parlor, kitchen, and toilet.

The Executive Chairman of the Teaching Service Board (TSB), Prof Suleiman Bello; the Executive Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Prof. Bulama Kagu; the Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Borno State, Jibrin Mohammed, and the immediate-past Deputy National Chairman of the NUT, Bulama Abiso, all took turns to commend Prof Zulum’s policies and programs to improve teachers’ welfare and the need to re-dedicate themselves to their duties.
