Bishop Stephen Adegbite, Lagos Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), stated on Tuesday that he was cited out of context by a section of the media in his alleged endorsement of All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

After reportedly saying, “God will punish us if we don’t back Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” Adegbite sparked the ire of numerous church leaders within and beyond the top Christian body, who have taken a firm stance against any political party that floats a same-faith presidential ticket.

Mischief makers, he claims, misinterpreted his statements during the presentation of the stewardship report of his 12 years in the Senate by Senator Oluremi Tinubu of Lagos Central Senatorial District.

Adegbite said in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Relations, Very Rev. Oladapo Daramola, that he was very conscious of his position of trust as the leader of Christians in Lagos state and would never speak loosely or anything close to invoking God’s curse on those who do not vote for Tinubu.

“Dearly beloved, you may have seen a report published by a national daily in which the Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Lagos State, Rt. Rev. Dr. S.T.V Adegbite was quoted as saying ‘God will punish us, if we do not back Tinubu – Lagos CAN.”

“I can assure you that this headline is not only deceptive, but also completely out of context.” This is not a damage control measure, but rather an attempt to clear the air.

“Clearly, the above was said in his personal capacity and was based on his fantastic friendship with Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

“He was not speaking on behalf of Christians or as the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria in Lagos.”

“The Bishop is acutely aware of his position of trust as the head of Christians in the state, and he would never speak casually or in any way akin to that.”

“The original story’s author has committed to tell the story as it was gathered, and this will be released as soon as it is finished.”

“However, please accept this as fact and disregard anything that has been published in the media or disseminated thus far.”
