The proposed Lekki International Airport has received official clearance from the federal government, according to Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos State.

At the ninth Ehingbeti Lagos Economic Summit, which is currently taking place at the Eko Hotel & Suites on Victoria Island, Minister of Aviation Senator Hadi Sirika presented the letter.

The decision of the Lagos State Government to construct an airport in the Lekki axis to serve the expanding population and enterprises in the vicinity of the Lekki industrial layout was endorsed by Nigeria’s aviation pressure organization, Aviation Safety Round Table Initiative (ASRTI).

Despite earlier assurances and the potential, including the extensive plans for the area’s development over the years, the project never got off the ground and the Lekki corridor kept growing, causing traffic chaos, logistical chaos, and congestion that had an adverse effect on the local economy and business opportunities.

The group has fervently argued in favor of a Public Private Partnership (PPP) and the necessity for the project’s regulators, the Federal Ministry of Aviation and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), to provide the required support and clearances.

ASRTI also took use of the occasion to encourage the relevant government levels and agencies to immediately start fixing the cenotaphs that had been built at Lisa, Epe, and Ejigbo to honor the victims of air tragedies.

The group claims that these locations “serve as a reminder to the troubling past of our industry and to honor our lost citizens. Therefore, accessibility improvements should be made to the roadways leading to these locations.
