The police in Ogun State have detained 29-year-old Kunle Abati for allegedly raping a 27-year-old woman with down syndrome.

The victim’s mother filed a report at the Ilese Ijebu divisional headquarters, and the suspect was apprehended on December 7.

According to reports, the mother told police that she had sent her daughter on an errand at around 7:30 am on the specified day and that when she got home, she found bloodstains on her clothes.

The mother claimed that when she questioned her daughter about the blood on her dress, the victim took her to the home of the suspect and explained that the suspect had carnal knowledge of her. This was according to a statement made by the Ogun police image maker, Abimbola Oyeyemi.

Following the report, according to Oyeyemi, the DPO of Ilese Ijebu, CSP Paul Omiwole, instructed his men to pursue the suspect, who was later captured.

Oyeyemi said on Saturday that during questioning, the suspect admitted to the crime and said that he also used the woman’s health issue to justify what he did before learning that she was a virgin.

He claimed that the ‘bleeding victim’ was quickly transported to the Ijebu-Ode General Hospital for medical attention.

Lanre Bankole, the commissioner of police, has in the meantime directed that the suspect be transferred to the State CIID’s Anti-Human Trafficking and Child Labor Unit for further investigation and thorough prosecution.
