According to the privacy activist group Reclaim The Net, Microsoft is pioneering a world first in Nigeria. According to a press release, the Nigeria Digital Identification for Development (ID4D) project will investigate “data protection and capacity development.” Nonye Ujam, Microsoft’s head of government affairs, praised the Nigeria Digital ID4D project for its progress in digital identity and pledged Microsoft’s readiness to assist the project in its success.

“We are here to support you in making things work very well.” “We are pleased with Nigeria ID4D’s achievements in such a short period,” Ujam said (pictured above).

“Microsoft Corporation has invested heavily and intervened extensively in capacity development and cyber security.” “In addition to assisting governments with capacity development, Microsoft meets their stakeholders where they are, holds their hands, and closes any identified gaps,” Ujma said. Just as ‘normal’ people work hard to upgrade and update themselves, many ‘bad actors’ work just as hard, if not harder, to update their skills and: “This is why we must take data protection and cyber security very seriously,” Ujma said.

Musa Solomon, the project co-ordinator for ID4D, stated that the publicly-funded Nigerian organization is willing to collaborate with “as many relevant stakeholders as possible” to ensure the project’s success. Solomon went on to say that the team is “working very hard” on data security.

“We are constrained by time because elections are approaching.” We are working hard to strike a balance between urgency and quality. “It will not only be done quickly, but also very well,” Soloman stated. “Stakeholder engagement is an ongoing activity, and Microsoft is our major stakeholder.” We are eager to collaborate with [anyone].”

The European Investment Bank, World Bank, and French Development Agency are all contributing to the Nigeria Digital Identification for Development (ID4D) project. However, the activist group Reclaim The Net identified this as an issue that its members, who are “tired of censorship, cancel culture, and the erosion of civil liberties,” need to be aware of.
