The first office of an IT company, Amazon Web Services, Inc., or AWS, has reportedly opened in Lagos, Nigeria.

The company’s Regional Manager for Sub-Saharan Africa, Amrote Abdella, said in a statement on Tuesday that the office was opening in order to further its commitment to Africa.

According to Ms. Abdella, the opening of the new Lagos office was part of AWS’s effort to support the country’s expanding customer and partner base.

AWS, an Amazon subsidiary, provides clients all over the world with website hosting, backup, analytics, digital marketing, application integration, blockchain, networking, and other related services.

“With a local presence, AWS will support new and current clients looking to use AWS products and services to innovate, reduce their information technology (IT) costs, and expand their businesses in the cloud.

“We are thrilled to open our first AWS office in Nigeria. Lagos offers a talent pool that is highly skilled and creative, and the city is home to numerous startups that are expanding quickly and renowned Nigerian companies that are setting the standard for digital innovation.

In order to help our customers accelerate their digital transformation and provide cutting-edge new products and services to the Nigerian community, Ms. Abdella said, “We look forward to fostering the country’s pioneering spirit.”

According to Ms. Abdella, AWS Activate offers startups the tools they require to launch on AWS, including up to $100,000 in credits, training, support, and connections to incubators, accelerators, and venture capital firms.

She claims that AWS Academy supports educators and university students in gaining knowledge and skills related to AWS Cloud computing, accelerating learning in this area.

The regional manager said that AWS Academy member institutions in Nigeria included the University of Benin, University of Jos, and Igbinedion University.
