According to the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), over 89 million Nigerians have been enrolled in the national identity database.

NIMC Director-General Aliyu Aziz stated this at a press conference on Thursday, ahead of the 4th national identity day.

The event, which is scheduled for Friday, is titled “traditional institutions as critical stakeholders for citizen mobilization.”

Aziz stated that 82 million people were added to the seven million who were enrolled when he took office in November 2015.

“For this year’s identity day, we’re collaborating with traditional institutions and their leaders to raise awareness about NIN enrollment,” he said.

“Since then, we’ve grown the database at a rate of two to three million per month on average.”

“The 89 million are the mainstream people, so there are still local people in villages, petty traders, market people, and artisans in rural areas across the country.” “Everyone has the right to NIN.”

Identity, according to Aziz, is a tool for empowerment, and greater use of digital identity can aid in development and coordination for better government service delivery.

The commission, he said, had increased equipment upgrades nationwide from 1000 to 29,000, and he advised new enrollees to always be accompanied by literate people to minimize errors in the enrollment process.

Aziz assured that more equipment had been purchased by the commission to enhance the enrollment process after attributing the failure of NIMC’s data centers to the equipment upgrade.

Additionally, he stated that as soon as the integration was complete, the commission would permit individuals to independently modify their data through the NIMC app.

The director-general reaffirmed that enrollment was free for all citizens and legal residents despite the fact that the commission claimed to charge some fees for changing enrollees’ biodata.

Aziz urged the media once more to continue the effort to educate the people in the hinterland, especially in their own languages.
