A police officer assigned to the Nigeria Police Force’s State Intelligence Bureau, Nasarawa State Police Command, is accused of raping and impregnating his 15-year-old niece.

Mrs Rabiatu Addra, the State Chairman of the International Federation of Women Lawyers, made the announcement during a press conference in Lafia, the state capital, on Wednesday.

The chairperson of FIDA stated that the incident was reported by a whistleblower, who claimed that the victim was raped by her uncle, an inspector in the Nigeria Police Force.

The suspect, according to her, has been apprehended. She also reaffirmed her commitment to following up on the case and ensuring that the suspect is prosecuted as a deterrent to other state residents.

Addra also urged the state police command to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.

“Upon receiving the information from the whistleblower, FIDA, in collaboration with the Sexual and Gender Based Violence Response team, facilitated and mobilized police officers to arrest the suspect,” she said.

“Our team, along with the police, took the victim to the hospital and paid for her treatment, but she lost the six-month-old baby.” The state Ministry of Justice also paid for a DNA test as part of the ongoing investigation to find the true culprit.”

Mrs Rabiatu Addra, on the other hand, stated that the victim had been released from the hospital and was reunited with her family.

“The team is always ready and prepared to promote, protect, and serve women’s and children’s rights.” “We are urging victims of abuse to always have the courage to speak up so that we can provide the necessary support,” she said.

Attempts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ramhan Nansel, for comment on the issue had failed as of the time of filing this report, as he had not returned phone calls or text messages sent to his mobile lines.
