People of Nigerian descent have had a great year overall, and on Tuesday, a few of them created political history by winning significant leadership positions in their respective states.

On Tuesday, November 8, Segun Adeyina, Gabe Okoye, Solomon Adesanya, Phil Olaleye, Carol Kazeem, Esther Agbaje, and Adeoye “Oye” Owolewa were chosen to represent their respective states in the legislatures of Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Minnesota.

In Georgia, Democratic Party candidates Segun Adeyina, Gabe Okoye, Solomon Adesanya, and Phil Olaleye all won seats in the state legislature as representatives from their respective districts. Esther Agbaje was re-elected as a state representative in Minnesota, and Carol Kazeem, a fellow Democrat, ran for state representative in Pennsylvania.

Adeoye “Oye” Owolewa was re-elected as a member of the Washington, D.C., House of Representatives (Shadow Representative).
