As the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, have fallen out, the governor of Oyo State, Engineer Seyi Makinde, has given some indication of the presidential candidate he will back.
On Sunday, he promised that he would support the choice made by the Yoruba social-cultural group Afenifere.

This comes amid speculations that Afenifere is endorsing Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the All Progressive Congress (APC) candidate for president in 2023, to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari.

When the former governor of Lagos State visited the state to meet with the Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, Makinde made his position known in Akure, the capital of Ondo State.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain was speaking on behalf of his deputy, Bayo Lawal, who stated that despite their affiliation with different political parties, they embrace the decision about the Afenifere and Yoruba race.

He said in Yoruba: “Since he was elected governor of Oyo State, he never downplayed the importance of Yoruba land.

There was never a moment when he didn’t answer the phone when Baba called. There was never a gathering to which he was not invited, whether it was organized by Afenifere or another Yoruba organization.

“Now, although we belong to different political parties, our tribe unites us. At the gathering of political and Yoruba stakeholders, Lawal delivered Governor Makinde’s message and said, “For this reason, what he wants me to assure you is that in Yoruba land, whatever you have decided to accomplish, he is in favor.”
