In the early hours of Sunday, a fire disaster at Bariga in Lagos claimed the life of a 50-year-old man.

The middle-aged man was killed after fighting two fire disasters in the state’s Bariga and Somolu areas, according to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.

Adeseye Margaret, director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, who confirmed this, said that the emergency was first reported to the agency at 00:31 on Sunday at 19 Apata Street in Shomolu and at 03:19 at 48 Jagunmolu Street in Bariga.

According to reports, the second fire was reported just as the first one’s firefighting was coming to an end.

The Shomolu incident involved four rooms and three shops in a bungalow building with eight rooms and four shops, while the Bariga Fire involved ten rooms in a bungalow building with 25 rooms and 18 shops, according to the Director’s statement.

The Ilupeju and Isolo Fire Crews, who both responded to the two distinct emergencies, “met them well alight and lamented delayed calls as Fire had caused havoc before they were alerted to salvage the situations,” she said.

According to the preliminary investigation, negligence was the root cause of both fires, which caused an electrical surge that was reportedly seen at Shomolu before the fire fighters arrived.

Unfortunately, a male adult of about 50 years old was found and turned over to the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit in Bariga, whereas there were no fatalities or serious injuries in the case of Somolu.
