Two male adults were reportedly swept away by flood in two different locations in Lagos State’s Iyana Ipaja and Command areas.

This came just hours after nine people were rescued from a sinking storey building in Maryland.

The incidents occurred during the torrential rains that lashed Lagos, particularly between the weekend and yesterday morning.

When the flood took over Ajayi Street, Olubodun Ifesowapo, Fafunwa, Ipaja West, and Ti-Oluwani in the state’s Alimosho Local Government Area, one of them, simply identified as Alfa, was swept away.

Alfa was said to have fled with his wife and four children only to return to his house to pick up some items before being swept away.

While the deceased was swept away, community members were able to rescue two other people who were with him.

Alfa’s immediate family has been evacuated to stay with a relative as a result of the incident.

Another adult man was said to have missed his steps on the Command bridge and was swept away by the running water before help arrived.

Ibrahim Farinloye, the Lagos Territorial Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, confirmed the incident.

According to him, floods had affected some communities in Lagos, and emergency operations were underway in those areas, particularly in Alimosho, Kosofe, and Ifelodun Ajeromi.

9 rescued from sinking building

Meanwhile, officials from the Lagos State Fire Service rescued nine occupants of Plot 47, Akinwunmi Estate, Mende, Maryland area of Lagos who were trapped in the sinking building yesterday.

When the rescued women noticed the building sinking, they raised the alarm. They couldn’t leave their apartments because the ground floor had been flooded by the previous night’s downpour.

According to the Chief Fire Officer/Deputy Head of Lagos State Fire and Rescue, Ogabi Olajide, the alert was received at 10 a.m., and firefighters from the Ikeja station were dispatched to the scene.

“On arrival at the scene, it was discovered that nine female adults were trapped in a storey building that was sinking due to the terrain of the environment combined with the overnight downpour,” Ogabi said.

“With the assistance of other emergency responders on the scene, the firefighters quickly swung into action, rescuing all nine people without injury.”

“The rescued victims are all in stable condition, and search and rescue operations have been completed, with all at risk evacuated.”
